the second wizarding war was a severe blow to the wizarding population. several pureblood families were nearly wiped out, and hundreds of muggleborn witches and wizards were lost, on top of many irreversible casualties. a great concern for the welfare of wizardkind developed, setting the entire wizarding community on edge. in response, the ministry of magic searched for a means of preserving the already decreasing magical population of the united kingdom.
a solution was finally found and, after much debate and speculation within the ministry, in january of 2023 the law of unity was passed. this law states that any single witch, wizard, and certain muggles from ages seventeen to 38 will be matched and set to marry. the first official ministry-approved uniting banquet took place on 14 february 2023, announcing the betrothal of the first five couples: summers and sinclair; goldstein and macboon; stimpson and tremlett; wood and dimitrov; harris and fudge. naturally, we’ve named the lovely brides first.
these five couples were given a month to plan and prepare, and were married in march of 2023. since that glorious first uniting, 10 more have been performed by the lovely frida ledbetter, the ministry representative for the uniting. while the fifty couples that were united have found happy homes and begun to raise the next generation of witches and wizards, the single members of the population are still unsettled by the hand of the ministry guiding their lives.
those who entered into contract marriages have found a greater struggle in marriage than those who have been united. their rash decisions have cost them their freedom, as the ministry has also prohibited divorce. contract marriages perpetuate the paranoia of the single population, warning them against the unitings, which have been created with the sole intention of bringing together the souls who are already destined to be together. the ministry has made its mistakes in the past, but the new minister of magic, edgar fogg, is a fresh face. he has ensured that each uniting has been true to the expectations of the people. he has met the cries of doubt from an unknowing population with respect and dignity, encouraging patience and open-mindedness.
the wizarding community has truly changed from this new influence, but whether it will continue to be a change for the better is in the hands of the people. the ministry would like to remind you that while trust is often rewarded with happiness, doubt often curates misery.
thank you for your time and we'll see you at the next uniting!
